Our Middle School is intent on providing high quality instruction and support that will enable students to become proficient in the required standards for their grade. Middle school students will engage in a rigorous, standards based curriculum which includes:
a. Learning Expeditions – Students will engage in long term, in-depth studies of subject curriculum. Most students will experience two learning expeditions throughout the year.
b. Intensives – Intensives are similar to expedition, but are shorter in duration. They are typically designed to delve deeply into subject matter that might not fit into the expedition.
c. Adventure – Our adventure program supports the expeditionary learning model. The outdoor adventure trips will support the curriculum that is being taught in the expeditions or intensives. They also provide students with an opportunity to learn teamwork, perseverance and provide them with an opportunity to discover that they can accomplish more than they imagined.
d. Best Teaching Practices – With the support of Expeditionary Learning, our teachers are trained in how to plan and deliver high quality instruction, using established best teaching practices.
The grading scale that we are using for the 7th and 8th grades consists of 4 levels, each represented by a number, 1 through 4. It is important to understand that as a school we do not compile grades based on a point or percentage system. We determine grades based on the students proficiency of learning targets.
1 – represents a BEGINNING level of achievement on that assignment or assessment. This level characterizes a non-proficient and inadequate knowledge of subject content based on the State Core Curriculum.
2 – represents a DEVELOPING level of achievement on that assignment or assessment. This level characterizes a generally accurate, yet below proficient knowledge of subject content based on the State Core Curriculum.
3 – represents an ACHIEVING level of accomplishment on that assignment or assessment. This level characterizes a skilled and proficient demonstration of content knowledge based on the State Core Curriculum.
4 – represents an EXEMPLARY level of achievement on that assignment or assessment. This level characterizes an in depth and excellent knowledge of subject content. The exemplary student has gone above and beyond basic proficiency based on the State Core Curriculum.
